How Credit Actually Works

Credit is a record of reliability, priced as risk.

Credit is a lender's estimate of how reliably you repay borrowed money. Your file is a history, and your score is a summary of that history expressed as risk.

Scores are built mostly from payment history and how much of your available credit you are using. Length of history, mix of accounts, and recent applications fill in the rest.

No single action produces a guaranteed score change. Consistent behaviour over months is what moves a file.

Key takeaways

  • Payment history and utilization carry the most weight.
  • Scores describe risk, not character.
  • Consistency over months, not overnight fixes.
